Bio

Sheena Maria Connell has been active in the development of international education at public & private institutions, intensive English programs, and secondary schools with more than 12 years of combined experience in an IE setting. Sheena has served in International Offices at University of North Texas, University of Oklahoma, and currently as Assistant Director of International Student & Scholar Services at University of the Incarnate Word. At UIW she managed SEVP compliance and university policy for multiple campuses to include three health science campuses and two secondary schools.


As a graduate of the NAFSA Academy, her accomplishments are owed to knowledgeable and driven NAFSA colleagues and mentors who have guided much of her career and personal development. With experience in SEVP regulations and policy, SEVIS functionality, IEM & recruitment initiatives, cross- cultural training, university-community partnerships, student programming, and NAFSA mentoring, Sheena was selected as a two-term Region III Academy Coach.

 Sheena has chaired and presented over 30 sessions at NAFSA Annual and Regional conferences, served as Poster Fair Organizer, session and awards reviewer, NAFSA Connector Program mentor and Open Meeting facilitator. She currently holds the ISTA Network Leader position for a second term and as a member of the KCISSS National Team works closely with KCISSS Regulatory Practice committee to forecast ISSS needs and set resources for best practices in the field.

As an active NAFSA Trainer Corp Member, she has trained F-1 Beginner, F-1 Intermediate, J-1 Beginner, J-1 Intermediate, and F-1 Secondary workshops at the Annual, Regional, and State conferences. Sheena was awarded the 2017 NAFSA Region III Certificate for Special Service to International Education, for holding multiple roles within NAFSA and mentoring up and coming IE professionals. On the local level, she serves on the Leadership Committee of the San Antonio Forum for International Education and is a member of the Study San Antonio Consortium.

Sheena is an avid Couchsurfing host, an aspiring Mezcalier, and travels internationally with her beach Ultimate Frisbee team.
